PROVO, Utah – New week for BYU football and the big question once again is, who will start at quarterback?

BYU’s official depth chart for this week’s game against fellow FBS Independent Liberty features three quarterbacks atop the quarterback spot.

Sophomore Zach Wilson, redshirt freshman Jaren Hall, and redshirt freshman Baylor Romney were all listed with or’s next to their name on the chart.

The fourth quarterback listed with no or next to his name was redshirt sophomore Joe Critchlow who saw action last Saturday in the win over Utah State.

Head coach Kalani Sitake didn’t make any announcements on Monday at his weekly press conference who the starter would be when the Cougars take on Liberty.

Wilson started the first five games of the season for BYU accumulating 1,312 passing yards and five touchdown passes before suffering an injury to his thumb in the loss against Toledo on September 28th.

Since that game against the Rockets, Wilson had surgery on his injured thumb. But the expectation was that Wilson would return back to playing before the end of the 2019 regular season.

Last week, Wilson had the cast taken off his thumb and he began throwing the football in practices with teammates.

BYU head coach Kalani Sitake said Wilson was somewhere between questionable and doubtful for this week’s game against the Flames.

Hall suffered a second concussion of the season in BYU’s win at Utah State. The first concussion against USF on October 12th kept Hall in concussion protocol for 12 days according to reports. Sitake on Monday said that Hall’s life is all that matters to him right now.

The one quarterback in this group that has an or next to his name that appears to be healthy is Baylor Romney. A redshirt freshman from El Paso, Texas, who was born and raised in Mormon Colonies in Mexico has been a gamer for BYU in the last two games.

Romney started and led BYU to a victory over nationally-ranked Boise State. Two weeks later, Romney stepped in for the injured Hall again in the second half against Utah State and put the rivalry game out of reach from the Aggies.

“The guy that you see right now that enters the field whenever he plays, he handles himself with such professionalism. It’s amazing. It’s just nice to know that you can always have that guy ready to roll,” said Sitake when asked about Romney.

Regardless of who Aaron Roderick and the offense decide will be the starting quarterback, they have an embarrassment of riches at the most important position on the field. Each one of these three players could lead BYU to victories moving forward if their name is called.
