BYU Football’s Final Stat Leaders From 2024 Season

Jan 6, 2025, 2:14 PM

PROVO, Utah – BYU football had a memorable season in 2024.

After being picked to finish 13th in the preseason Big 12 media poll, BYU put together an 11-2 record and won the Alamo Bowl over nationally-ranked Colorado.

A team needs top performers throughout to win 11 games while navigating a power conference schedule. In 2024, BYU had plenty who stepped up when called upon.

Here’s a look at the top performers statistically during BYU’s 2024 season.

One thing to note: all players listed as stat leaders, except Jakob Robinson, are currently projected to be part of the 2025 squad. So many of the stat leaders could run it back next season.

Passing Yards: Jake Retzlaff (2,947)

Jake Retzlaff finished 53 yards away from a 3,000-yard season. His 2,947 yards through the air is the third-highest total in the Kalani Sitake era (since 2016). Zach Wilson (2020; 3,692) and Jaren Hall (2022; 3,171) were the only quarterbacks to throw for more yards than Retzlaff since 2016.

Rushing Yards: LJ Martin (723)

After Tyler Allgeier set the single-season rushing record in 2021 (1,601), BYU football hasn’t produced a 1,000-yard rusher in the following three seasons. However, sophomore LJ Martin rushed for a career-high 723 yards on 138 carries in 10 games.

Martin missed three games due to an ankle injury in week two at SMU.

It’s the second consecutive season that Martin led BYU in rushing. Last year, he ran for 518 yards.

Through two seasons, Martin is 28th among all-time career rushing leaders in BYU football history with 1,241 yards.

Receiving Yards: Chase Roberts (854)

Chase Roberts led BYU in receiving yards during the 2024 season. It’s the second consecutive year that Roberts leads BYU in receiving.

The 6-foot-4 junior finished with 52 receptions for 854 yards and four touchdowns.

Roberts announced last month that he would return for the 2025 season. During the Alamo Bowl win over Colorado, he suffered an upper-body injury that put him in a sling after the game.

Scoring Leader: Will Ferrin (113)

Will Ferrin is the second player in the Kalani Sitake era to eclipse the century mark in a single season. Ferrin joins Tyler Allgeier, who reached 138 points in 2021.

The junior kicker has been BYU’s scoring leader for the second consecutive season. In 2023, Ferrin scored 65 points.

During the 2024 season, Ferrin was 24-of-27 on field goals and a perfect 41-41 in PATs.

Ferrin’s season-high for the longest field goal was 54 yards, which he made twice (Baylor and Colorado).

Touchdown Leader: LJ Martin (9)

BYU running back LJ Martin was the touchdown leader for the Cougars. He finished with seven rushing touchdowns and two receiving touchdowns.

All-Purpose Yards: Keelan Marion (914)

All-American kick returner Keelan Marion was BYU’s all-purpose yardage leader in 2024. Marion finished with 472 kick return yards, 346 receiving, and 96 rushing.

The junior receiver averaged 70.3 all-purpose yards per game.

Total Offense: Jake Retzlaff (3,364)

As usual, the starting QB ran away as the total offense leader. Along with Retzlaff’s 2,947 passing yards, the junior signal-caller rushed for 417 yards. Through the first half of the 2024 season, Retzlaff was BYU’s leading rusher until Martin returned from his injuries.

The last time BYU had a total offense leader who wasn’t a quarterback was in 1972 with RB Pete Van Valkenburg.

Tackles: Isaiah Glasker (70)

Redshirt sophomore linebacker Isaiah Glasker had a breakout season in 2024. Glasker led BYU in tackles with 70 tackles in 13 games played.

Interestingly, the 70-tackle number is the lowest number for a leading tackler at BYU since Nathan Hall had 72 tackles in 1993.

Including Glasker, BYU’s defense in 2024 had five players with at least 50 tackles.

Tackles For Loss: Isaiah Glasker (14.5)

Not only did Glasker lead BYU in tackles for loss, but he also led the entire Big 12 Conference in TFLs.

Sacks: Jack Kelly (5)

Weber State transfer linebacker Jack Kelly immediately impacted BYU’s defense. Kelly emerged as BYU’s sack leader for the 2024 season with five sacks.

Interceptions: Three Players (3)

BYU led the nation in interceptions this season with 22. Three players led the way, with three picks each: Jakob Robinson, Tanner Wall, and Isaiah Glasker.

One of Glasker’s three interceptions was a pick-six against Arizona.

Punting: Sam Vander Haar (33 punts, 1,412)

Former Pitt transfer Sam Vander Haar emerged as BYU’s starting punter. To begin the season, he was in a position competition with Landon Rehkow, but Vander Haar pulled away after nonconference action.

Vander Haar had 35 fewer punts than Ryan Rehkow had in the 2023 season.

In Vander Haar’s 33 punts, he averaged 42.8 yards per punt.
