Former Player: MLB Season Opening Day Will Be July 1

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Major League Baseball may have a start day for its delayed 2020 season. Former Minnesota Twins third baseman says sources tell him that the MLB’s opening day is set for July 1. The nine-year veteran tweeted that training camp will begin June 10 in preparation for the season.
“I just heard from multiple sources that on June 10th,” the tweet read. “Spring Training 2 will start. July 1st will be Opening Day and all teams will be playing at their home ballparks.”
Plouffe said he would be discussing the information on the next “Talkin’ Baseball” podcast episode.

On March 12 the MLB suspended all spring training games. Later, the March 26 opening date was delayed indefinitely. Currently, all major professional sports have ceased operation in the United States as they await a safe date to begin play.
Plouffe’s tweet coincides with reports that emerged last week that baseball was eyeing a 100 game schedule beginning in July.
Proposed MLB Season Opening Day
USA Today reported that momentum was growing for a shortened season which featured no traditional interleague games. Additionally, three divisions would make up the league. Though each team would get to play games in their own ballpark, no fans would be present.
The American League and the National Leagues would cease to exist. Interestingly, the result would pair many cross-town rivals in each division. including the Yankees and the New York Mets, and the Cubs and the Chicago White Sox.
The season could start as soon as late June, and no later than July 2 according to Bob Nightengale.

Opening Day Internationally
While the MLB season opening day has yet to find a start date, leagues around will soon be back in action. A five-game slate will open the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) season beginning at 1 a.m. ET on Tuesday. Better yet, ESPN purchased the rights to air the games to sports hungry fans in the US.

Likewise, Taiwan’s Chinese Professional Baseball League (CPBL) opened in April.
