SALT LAKE CITY – Utah basketball’s leading scorer Gabe Madsen earned an All-Big 12 Honorable Mention nod.
The league announced awards ahead of the Big 12 Conference Championship starting this Tuesday.
Utah will face UCF tomorrow night in the opening round of the conference tournament. The Knights defeated Utah just a couple of weeks ago, a loss that ultimately ended Craig Smith’s tenure, and led to the hiring of Alex Jensen.
Josh Eilert and the Runnin’ Utes look to avenge the loss against the Knights, and Madsen will play a vital role in Utah’s chances of securing the win over the Knights.
Utah basketball’s Gabe Madsen
Madsen, who is in his fifth and final season as a collegiate, led the team both in conference play (13.4 ppg) and on the season (15.3 ppg) as well. Madsen notched two major milestones in this fourth and final season as a Runnin’ Ute this season, joining the 1,000 points club and then breaking the Utah all-time 3-point field-goals made record.
Madsen has provided Utah some incredible moments, highlighted by his record-setting 3-pointer against Kansas that secured the upset win.
The 6-foot-6 guard led Utah in the scoring nine different times during the conference slate and is second in the Big 12 Conference with 54 made 3-pointers. Meanwhile, his 2.7 made 3-pointers per game is also good for second-most in the 20-game conference season slate.
His 8 made 3-pointers against Cincinnati on the road is tied for most in a single-game this season with two other players in the Big 12 Conference.
After joining the program in 2021, Madsen has played 115 games and started 99 of them. He’s steadily improved over the years, going from 6.8 points in 2021-22 to 15.2 points per game this season.
