SALT LAKE CITYDelta Center, the 34-year-old home of the Utah Jazz and Utah Mammoth, is undergoing a massive renovation as the franchises look to improve fan and player experiences. Giving new life to a revered building is just the beginning of a years-long project for the Smith Entertainment Group.

Adding a second professional team to downtown Salt Lake City has boosted the local economy. Still, owner Ryan Smith sees this as the tip of the iceberg for what downtown can represent to visitors and residents alike in the coming years.

“I think in three years we’ll definitely be underway,” Smith said of the project’s tentative timeline. “You’ll be able to see how it comes together, but there’s a lot of work. The prep work downtown is real.”

With the Salt Palace Convention Center and various Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints properties in the area, Smith dreams of enhancing the downtown experience for everyone.

“Our goal is to be able to make that experience you get inside the Delta Center happen outside,” Smith said.

Update on Delta Center facelift

Less than a decade after undergoing significant renovations, Delta Center is being reimagined again—this time with the NHL in mind.

Utah Mammoth owner Ryan Smith knew the longtime home of the Utah Jazz would need extensive changes to accommodate an NHL team for 41 games plus playoffs effectively.

“We’re doing only the lower bowl this time, then we’ll go from one side to the other,” Smith said of the three-year project. “We’re trying to keep the intimacy of Delta Center with the sightlines.”

From raising the playing surface’s base level to completely reimagining the lower bowl risers, Delta Center will be one of the few arenas designed for the NBA and also host an NHL team.
