SALT LAKE CITY, Utah- The Utah Hockey Club played as good as a team could for 93% of Monday night’s game against the San Jose Sharks, but a Holloween nightmarelike final five minutes had UHC fans in shock as they watched the Sharks score four unanswered goals to take an unthinkable overtime win back to the Bay Area.
Monday’s matchup featured two players who slotted their first goals as members of the Utah Hockey Club. Matias Maccelli put two in the net from close range and Mikhail Sergacheb slung one in from the blue line. Dylan Guenther also ended his scoring drought with the game’s opening goal.
All was pointing to a dominant Utah Hockey Club win against a struggling San Jose Sharks team until Fabian Zetterlund, Mikael Granlund, and Tyler Toffoli all scored goals off of offensive zone faceoffs to send the game to overtime.
In overtime, Nick Schmaltz had the first and only chance for UHC, a shot down the slot that was saved by Blackwood. Just a few minutes into the extra period, Michael Kesselring went to the box for hooking, and with the extra attacker, San Jose made easy work with Alexander Wennberg scoring the game-winning goal.
San Jose earned their first win of the young season but UHC still walks away with a point.
Back at Delta Center for hopefully some winning hockey by the home team.
Huge chance to get back into the win column tonight against a winless sharks squad.#UtahHC pic.twitter.com/tyLu8wzuXg

More new Utah Hockey Club apparel has arrived at the team store including these Fanatics hoodies. Players and coaches wear these all the time in the locker room.
Jerseys should be arriving in the next few weeks.#UtahHC pic.twitter.com/C5aqlcTGgK

This game is pretty physical early on.
All San Jose can really do is be physical and Utah is matching it as they're trying to be more physical as of late.
Small scrum breaks out in front of Utah's net after Ingram freezes the puck.#UtaHC

Sharks to the power play after Guenther is called for interference.
Weird start to this game so far.

Sharks are moving the puck really well inside the offensive zone. A lot of quality opportunities. Utah is lucky to not be trailing right now. Chances to score have been there for San Jose.

He needed this one bad.
No. 11 back on track. What a release. Absolute missile to the top shelf. That's how you light the lamp when goaltenders start paying more attention to you. Beat them with speed. https://t.co/BvlNJwQJet

Thats a beauty.
Wins positioning and scores from his knees off a rebound? Yeah, thats impressive.#UtahHC https://t.co/i1kJhFGzM6

So far, so good with these Utah Hockey Club line changes tonight.
Guenther back on track. Maccelli with his first for the club. Yeah, smart moves thus far.#UtahHC

Took a few minutes to settle in but that's a nice 1st period from #UtahHC
Currently lead 2-0 and a huge boost of confidence for Guenther and Maccelli. Both guys needed one.
Utah also leads shots on goal 11-9 and hits are nearly even with San Jose leading 11-10.

Spin-O-Rama by Cooley in the slot. Doesn't score but he has got some serious moves.#UtahHC

San Jose finally scores, and the lead is cut in half.
Bit of a weird play but the Sharks forward drove right to the net, protected the puck well with his body, and Ingram got taken out by his own player as the forward wrapped it around him.
2-1 Utah midway through the first.

Maccelli cleaning up another rebound. Really nice work up on that second line.
Hadn't scored yet before tonight this season. Now he has 2 and he's looking for the 3rd. https://t.co/t4kRSnHTFl

Pretty glove save from Ingram. Toffoli tried to sneak one past him on a rush and he snatched it.
So far, 21 saves on 22 shots tonight.#UtahHC

Maccelli is HUNTING for that third goal to make it a hat trick. As he should be. Still time left in the second period and an entire third to get it done.
You can tell he wants it.

He's been very good at putting pucks on net that others can tip in.
Finally, he gets one from deep. https://t.co/VerNbChvRE

Not so nice hit on Dylan Guenther that results in a scrap in front of Utah's bench. Ian Cole responds, and Maveric Lamoureux even gets involved.
That kid isn't afraid of the moment or anybody. Love what he's demonstrated the last 3 games since making his debut.#UtahHC

Sharks score late.
Lots of traffic in front of the net and it’s tipped in.
Utah leads 4-2 with 4 minutes left.#UtahHC

4-3…San Jose pulled their goalie and netted another.
We've got a game folks. Still 4:07 left in this one.#UtahHC

Unbelievable.
Sharks score again and we are tied in SLC…
4-4
Utah takes a timeout.

The Sharks scored 3 goals in less than 2 minutes…just absolutely unreal. Sharks are banging on the door for another too.
The momentum has completely shifted.#UtahHC

OT in Salt Lake City…
This game should be over. A number of Utah fans even left near the four-minute mark because it looked over.
Well, here we are tied at 4.

Penalty to the Utah Hockey Club.
Kesselring called for hooking…disaster situation.
4 on 3 advantage for San Jose in OT.
