SALT LAKE CITY- The long-awaited day has finally come as the newest addition to the Beehive State sports scene, formerly known as the Utah Hockey Club, has announced its permanent team name.

After a season as the Utah Hockey Club, the NHL franchise will now be known as the Utah Mammoth, an ode to the creature’s presence within our state thousands of years ago. Fans of the club have been patiently waiting for the announcement of a new name, so when news came down this morning that it was officially Mammoth, social media erupted with reactions.

Other NHL Teams Getting In On The Fun

When Utah posted the video on X this morning to announce the team name, some other teams from around the league, including the Senators, Jets, and Blackhawks, hopped in the comments to help usher in the new era.

The Nashville Predators, whose mascot is a saber-tooth tiger, a primitive beast that roamed the earth during the same era as the mammoth, are even looking forward to battling it out, just like their namesakes.

Following a year long process, several rounds of fan voting and more than 850,000 total votes, the NHLā€™s newest franchise finally settled on Utah Mammoth as their new name and the clear favorite amongst fans.

ā€œWe couldnā€™t be more excited to launch the official name and marks for Utahā€™s NHL hockey team. When it came to naming the team, we did something unprecedented ā€“ going through four rounds of community voting, including getting feedback not only on potential names but also on potential logos,ā€ Utah Mammoth owners, Ryan and Ashley Smith said.

ā€œFrom day one, we committed that this team would be built with and for the people of Utah, and we are excited to celebrate todayā€™s launch with the entire state.ā€

Maintaining their original color scheme of salt white, rock black and mountain blue, the organization made several adjustments to the original logo that fans voted on back in late January to form their new primary crest.

Found within the new primary Mammoth logo are nods to the state of Utah including the Wasatch Mountain Range and snow-capped peaks that form the beastā€™s crown; the shape of Utah, subtly embedded in the mountain silhouette; and the curved tusk to form a bold ā€œU.ā€

An ā€œMā€ can also be found within the Utah outline as a nod to the teamā€™s name.

The secondary logo includes the word ā€œUTAHā€ with the Mammoth tusk embedded into the ā€œU,ā€ as well as a bold tusked ā€œU.ā€

The third logo or ā€œUtah Badgeā€ is more of a classic emblem inspired by the UTAH stairstep design from the franchiseā€™s inaugural season sweaters.

The official slogan of the Utah Mammoth will be #TusksUp.

In the coming months, an in-arena Mammoth mascot will be revealed.
