Former Cougar Riley Burt Eager For Change With Aggies

LOGAN, Utah – After four years as a BYU Cougar, running back Riley Burt was looking for a change. He found that change in Logan with the Utah State Aggies.

“Coach A, he said, ‘we got two other kids from Utah coming up, why not join them? We got a good team, we need you,'” Burt said describing the recruiting pitch. “It was a good fit for that.”

Burt is one of three grad transfers the Aggies added on the offensive side of the ball along with former Utes Caleb Repp and Siaosi Mariner. After losing Darwin Thompson to the NFL draft, the Aggies reloaded with Gerold Bright stepping into the number one back.

They still needed depth.

“Riley, obviously he’s here for a reason,” said head coach Gary Andersen. “We brought all three of those transfers in and Riley is here because he makes us better at the running back position.”

Being an older, experienced player, the coaches like what he adds to the running back room, but it’s not the only what he sticks out.

“I’m the tallest by far, I think the other guys are 5’8″, 5’9″,” Burt joked. “I’m just trying to help the group and help any way I can.”

Familiarity Against Foes

Growing up just 29 miles away in Brigham City, Burt his familiar with the Aggies, but that’s not the only thing he’s familiar with. Burt also knows the Mountain West Conference.

Burt has an understanding of Mountain West opponents. At BYU, he rushed for 181 yards and two touchdowns against Mountain West teams.

“I’ve been playing Mountain West teams while I was at BYU so I kind of know how they are,” said Burt.

Even though he explored transferring to other Mountain West schools, he liked what the Aggies added the most.

“They have a good system, a good offense, a good team obviously,” said Burt. “I just like the program, I’ve always been a fan since I’ve been close.

With one season of college football left, he is working hard to help his teammates have a season just as good or better than last year.

“Just want to make it the best I can. I’ve been working all summer and fall camp. [I just wanna] have a good season.”

And with their eye on a conference title, a good season ultimately ends up with the Aggies as the kings of the Mountain West.
