RB Josh Davis: Weber State Is At The Peak Right Now

Jun 23, 2020, 12:00 PM | Updated: Apr 26, 2021, 3:44 pm

OGDEN, Utah – Weber State running back Josh Davis believes that the Wildcats have all of the tools to make a national championship run in 2020.

They will have an experienced group of players under Jay Hill this upcoming season that will be centered around the two-time All-American running back who has rushed for 2,498 yards and 20 touchdowns in 28 games played.

With 9 starters returning on offense and 8 on defense for Weber State, Davis feels that the Wildcats can win the schools first national championship.

“I think Weber State is at the peak right now, “Davis told KSL Sports anchor Sam Farnsworth. “We have the best group of running backs, we have the best group of linemen, our defense is solid and all of our coaches are the best in the state. I think they are going to lead us to a national championship. We just have to get back in pads and be able to practice with everyone.”

Not Having Spring Football

Just like every other college football program in the country, the Wildcats had their spring football practices cut short. Weber State was able to get two practices in before the coronavirus pandemic shut the rest of spring down. Davis has been trying to get as much work in on his own as possible.

“To be honest, it’s been quite boring,” Davis said. “Because nothing was open for a while, football practice got canceled, couldn’t see my teammates. I have just been hanging out at home trying to get some workouts in here and there. That’s what I have been doing with my time.”

Davis is excited for the day that the entire team can gather and practice together.

“When that time comes and we cross that path, I think we have to get our team together because we are making a national championship run here and Weber State has the team to do that,” Davis stated.

Playing For Quinton Ganther

Davis has had a lot of success at Weber State in just two seasons and is expected to have another big year. The Alta High School product gives credit to his teammates but especially his running back coach Quinton Ganther.

“Luckily, I have some good teammates and I have had coach Q (Quinton Ganther) bringing me along,” Davis said. “I have my receivers and linemen blocking for me. I think anyone can run through the holes that I am going through. It’s been great to be on this team with Weber State and have this ride.”

Ganther spent two seasons at the University of Utah where he rushed for over 1,700 yards from 2004-05. Davis has benefited greatly by the guidance of his running back coach.

“Quinton Ganther, his knowledge of the running back position is beyond… I have learned so much from him, how certain blocks will make me go certain ways and different reads. You can tell what they are going to do before the play. His knowledge of the game is beyond my years and beyond his I think,” Davis said.

Weber State is scheduled to open the 2020 college football season on Saturday, September 5 on the road against Wyoming.
